Saturday, Feb. 16th, the Malindi Youth association gathered for a Valentine’s giving back effort. Instead of spending money on Valentine’s treats, the youth agreed to buy or collect snacks, clothing and other useful items for the children of Home of Hope Children’s Home.

Amongst the group were four Elimu volunteer interns. The group shared snacks and played and danced with the children for the whole day. Everyone, volunteers and beneficiaries, were exhausted by the end of the event – but very happy.

Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.

Amongst the day’s activities was a special training on feminine hygiene. Two of our female volunteers, Annette and Claudia, were trained last week by our visitors from Friends from Ireland on teaching teenage girls about their bodies and how to care for themselves.

During the Friends from Ireland’s visit to Malindi they trained the students of Heri Sewing College to create hygiene kits which included handsewn reusable washable sanitary pads. Annette and Claudia lead a training for the whole group of children and their fellow volunteers (female and male).

The girls who needed them each received a hygiene kit of their own. Elimu is proud of our youth volunteers for their community spirit! It’s just one of the many ways that our youth are making a difference in their own community.
