Creating a nurturing environment where children can thrive emotionally, socially, and cognitively.
The Elimu Familia Stawi project brings to completion our Learning for Life approach by integrating early childhood into our suite of educational and skills development programs.
- Quinter Aoko, Elimu Program Officer - Special Needs Communities
Early childhood is a critical period of development that lays the foundation for a child’s future health, well-being, and success. However, many children and parents, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, lack access to quality early childhood services.
Elimu Familia Stawi translates as “Education for Thriving Families”. It is a project in collaboration with MaKly Child & Parent Centre in Basel, Switzerland and is designed to provide a nurturing environment where children can grow emotionally, socially, and cognitively. We target families who lack access to conventional educational resources, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
Impact Report
By integrating technology, creativity, and nature, we aim to equip both children and their parents/guardians with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world. There are two target populations. The first is families and caregivers within Malindi, who can easily access Elimu Resource Centre. The second is families and caregivers in surrounding rural communities, starting with one nearby village. The target age group for children is 1 – 6 years.
Activities for children will include interactive learning, storytelling, creative arts, outdoor play, nutrition, agriculture and introductory STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) exploration. Parents and caregivers will be led through workshops providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to support their children’s development at home. Topics will include the importance of play, positive parenting, creating a stimulating environment for young children, and engaging in meaningful conversations with children.
Elimu Familia Stawi project is founded on play-based learning with specially designed toys and educational resources that support various aspects of child development. These materials encourage exploration, creativity, and critical thinking, ensuring that learning is both fun and impactful. The Elimu team will conduct workshops for parents and caregivers, providing them with the knowledge and skills they need to support their children’s development at home. Topics to be covered include the importance of play, positive parenting, creating a stimulating environment, and engaging in meaningful conversations with children.
We have established Green Walls at Elimu Resource Centre. These are vertical gardens that not only beautify the learning space but also serve as a practical tool for teaching children about nutrition and the environment. Children and parents will learn about the importance of healthy eating and how to grow their own food. This knowledge empowers them to make informed choices about their diet, laying the foundation for lifelong healthy habits. Parents will be encouraged to establish Green Wall gardens at home as well.
