We are excited to launch off on a new initiative in collaboration with Action Aid and Sauti ya Wanawake Pwani (“Women’s Voice in the Coast” in English). These two organizations one international and one local to coastal Kenya, have been running an important programme that supports young girls aged 9 – 19 who have dropped out of primary school or never been to school. They come to a local “catch-up centre” – an available study space in the community – to gain numeracy and literacy skills. The goal being to make them functional in Swahili, English and basic math.
Once the girls acquire the desired skill level, the partners want them to move to the next level, which is guiding them to viable options for their future. Those options include vocational training, entrepreneurship and getting back to school to complete primary or high school. Their search for the right partner to deliver this component of the programme brought them to Malindi last month for a consultation with the Elimu team.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Elimu followed up with a visit last week to their community base in a village called Garashi about an hour outside Malindi. We were given a good overview of the programme and the background of the girls involved. We toured through several of the Catch-up Centres and get a good feel for the local community and the facilities. We even got to meet a group of the girls and their teacher at one location. We returned to debrief the rest of the team in Malindi as we prepare to get back out to the field the following week. It feels good to be back engaged with young people after months of lockdown. COVID-19 protocols observed as prescribed by the government, of course.
