Elimu’s transformative journey in Kenya finds its roots in the unwavering support of the Ottawa community. This story began with Nina Chung, our founder, reaching out to a small circle of friends when she first ventured into Kenya. Today, she extends an annual invitation to her hometown, urging her Ottawa community to join Elimu’s mission of changing lives in Kenya.
In September 2023, the community once again rallied around Elimu for our annual Charity BBQ event themed “Then & Now.” Through compelling visuals, Nina narrated the remarkable journey of sponsored children who, with the help of Elimu’s programs, had blossomed into high school graduates, college attendees, and successful professionals with families of their own.
As the aroma of grilling burgers and sausages filled the air, a sense of shared joy enveloped the attendees. The event raised over $7,300, just shy of the $8,000 target. These generous contributions will play a vital role in sustaining, upgrading, and expanding resources at the Elimu Resource Centre. This ensures that children, youth, and parents continue to access top-notch digital educational resources, paving the way for brighter futures.
As December rolled around, Nina once again immersed herself in the community spirit, participating in the Christmas Craft Fair hosted by the Tanglewood Community Centre in Ottawa. Here, she showcased Elimu’s artisan Pendo ragdolls and kitenge fabric aprons, bringing a touch of Kenyan craftsmanship to the festive event.
Elimu’s story in Ottawa is a testament to the profound impact that a united community can have on the lives of those across the globe. Through shared efforts and a commitment to making a difference, the Ottawa community has become an integral part of Elimu’s story, creating ripples of positive change that extend far beyond their local borders.
We remain ever grateful for this continued show of love and support which has brought us very far in making brighter futures in Kenya
