In Kenya’s ever-evolving educational landscape, a transformative journey is unfolding. In collaboration with the Swiss-based NGO, Comundo, and in cooperation with the Kilifi County government, Elimu is embarking on an ambitious initiative to revolutionize Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Kilifi County. The project will not just lead to the modernizing of TVET facilities but will be reshaping the future of TVET through establishing Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVE).
While Vocational Training Centres (VCTs) have long served as pillars of skill development, they face several critical challenges: fragmented programs, limited integration with formal education, weak industry connections, and insufficient financial resources. These gaps have created a disconnect between education and employability, leaving many talented individuals without clear pathways to success.
This new journey begins with the backdrop of these challenges and Kenya’s commitment to competency-based education, where the traditional focus on knowledge acquisition gives way to practical competencies taught through hands-on active learning.
At Elimu, we envision a brighter future – one where Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) evolve into dynamic Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) providing high-quality education and training in a specific vocational field or sector. Our goal isn’t merely about upgrading facilities; it’s about delivering state-of-the-art vocational education and training programs as well as creating vibrant ecosystems where education meets industry needs, where innovation flourishes, so that students gain the skills needed to thrive in today’s and tomorrow’s workforce.

The CoVE pilot implementation tells a story of progress and promise. Muyeye VTC will focus on plumbing excellence. Construction of a state-of-the-art facility is already underway with the digital infrastructure improvement soon to follow as the ICT Labs maintenance is done. Meanwhile, Roka VTC will focus on fashion design education, demonstrating how traditional crafts can evolve into contemporary fields of excellence. The vision for the project extends beyond these initial sites – with the goal of establishing at least one CoVE in each sub-county, creating a network of excellence that spans regions. Through this initiative, we’re bridging the gap between education and employment, fostering innovation, and empowering the next generation of skilled professionals.
