MEET LAVENDER – PAVING A PATHWAY TO HER DREAM CAREER

MEET LAVENDER – PAVING A PATHWAY TO HER DREAM CAREER

In this series of eMagazine articles, we introduce you to our recent team of youth volunteers who have shown true heroism in the way they contributed to the growth of our organization.

Lavender Omweri is an ambitious 19 year old who has been a volunteer at Elimu Resource Centre since May this year. She started as an intern, but after her term came to an end she decided to stay on to learn more and grow at Elimu. After completing her high school education, Lavender had hoped to pursue a course in accounting and management skills, but her family could not afford the fees. She was fortunate to receive a scholarship from MasterCard Foundation towards a course in hospitality at a local technical institute. It was through this course that she discovered a passion for journalism and media.

Her experiences at the Centre have helped Lavender to grow her skills in so many areas including front office operations, photography and working with learners in our mobile digital reading program. She also benefited from our Cisco Networking Academy receiving her internationally recognized certificate in IT Essentials.

Though only nineteen years old, Lavender brings so much wisdom and fresh energy to the team. She is ever willing to work across departments and is always ready to help out whenever called upon.

“Everything in life is possible as long as you have hope and faith in God, believe in yourself and be optimistic,” says she when asked about her boundless energy and flexibility.

When not at the front desk at ERC welcoming our guests or elsewhere filling in for staff in our programs, you will find Lavender taking opportunities to sharpen her knowledge in photography and reporting through online learning. She hopes to someday pursue her dream career at the university level. We will watch and encourage her as she paves her pathway into the media field!
