Elimu has the pleasure of hosting a small team from Friends from Ireland at Elimu Resource Centre this week. Brought to us by our friends at Rotaract, the junior arm of Malindi Rotary Club, they are here in Malindi teaching the sewing students at Heri Ministries Sewing Project (our sewing partners in Malindi) how to sew washable reusable sanitary pads.
Strong women don’t play the victim. Don’t make themselves look pitiful and don’t point fingers. They stand and they deal.
They are preparing kits that will go to girls in rural areas (where access to sanitary pads is a luxury). The Rotaract Club will purchase the hygiene kits from the sewing college and distribute them to schools in the surrounding rural areas. Elimu connected with Rotary and Rotaract on a joint effort to deliver digital reading tools to the Junior Remand Centre in Malindi, where vulnerable youth have limited access to any learning opportunities.
The female hygiene project is another initiative of Rotaract Malindi. We are happy to have been able to connect them with the sewing college. They plan to be around for the next two weeks working with the young seamstresses and also training them to be trainers on feminine hygiene issues in their own village communities.
