Before the close of the year, we were able to spread the Kolibri “wings” beyond Kilifi County to our neighbouring county, Tana Delta, with a trip to Garsen. Warm thanks to John Green and Filikita Jillo of Amani Centre, home of Amani FM, for hosting Maina and Nina for the day. Our goal was to discuss pilot testing the Kolibri platform in schools in this area so we can prove the affordability and flexibility of this edtech system that does not require internet to distribute digital content from a teacher’s laptop to students. Content can be accessed by any Wifi-enables devices including the government tablets in school or via a projector for group learning.

We were kindly received by Mr. William Nasongo, the area DCC and Mr. Feisual Obbo, Sub-County Education Officer. Representatives from a local primary and secondary school were introduced to the concept of eLearning in their classrooms using the offline Kolibri platform. We also described the benefits and potential of our offline eLearning solution to the journalist team at Amani FM.
On an even more exciting note, we discussed with the Amani FM team the possibility of distributing the educational content on the Kolibri platform further around the community via a server hosted at their station. This would allow us to test a concept of seamless learning from the classroom to homes, with students accessing their daily lessons and homework from the digital platform but without the cost of internet and with increased security for these young users.
