Every school holiday we receive hundreds of students at the Elimu Resource Centre in Malindi, Kenya who are looking for a serene environment to study, revise their school work and complete their holiday assignments.
Many of these students need assistance with their assignments and understanding concepts they find challenging. To help address these needs we enlist volunteer teachers from the community.
Teachers from different schools around Malindi, volunteer a few hours every weekday to assist students with their questions. Many learners have benefitted from consulting with these teachers, especially those learners who struggle with science related subjects.
When students go back home and share with their peers about the wonders at our Centre, we see more students coming through our doors, hungry to learn. They find all the resources they need to excel. They access thousands of materials through our Kindles and paper books. They also get to work with the digital resources on our Offline eLearning Solution on tablets, and watch literature videos at our DigiTech Lab.
To test their progress, our volunteer teachers, guided by our Programs Officer, Education, prepare contests in various subjects. During the December holidays, learners competed in Math, Chemistry, Physics and English. The best performers were awarded certificates of achievement, which they can use to show their competence in the future.
A recent high school graduate attested that, “I had a complete turnaround in my English scores because of the support I got from the teacher at Elimu Resource Centre. She helped me change my attitude towards the subject, and I believe this contributed to my A scores in my final exam.”
Our volunteer teachers really save the day! In many ways, they have become part of the Elimu community. Because of their support, we continue to reach more learners from the Malindi community. Together, we are living the Elimu dream; creating a world where every learner can thrive in their education regardless of their geographical and socio-economic background.
