The community of Malindi, Kenya, now has an innovative new solution to their educational gaps.
A digital hub for learners The Centre enhances access to education, improves digital literacy in the community and helps youth after high school to find pathways to more meaningful futures through skills development, employment planning and entrepreneurship.
Elimu Resource Centre is a social enterprise project of Elimu, a charitable organization registered in Kenya, Canada and the U.S.A.
Along with our digital library and academic eLearning programs, Elimu Resource Centre is a hub for entrepreneurship development. Income from our services will improve our sustainability and expand our programs to better serve youth out of high school with entrepreneurship training, coaching in employability skills and accessing post-secondary studies including vocational instruction.
Inspired by the children in our projects, Elimu Resource Centre was created to bridge gaps at school—over-crowded classrooms, lack of textbooks, not enough teachers, as well as poor study environments at home. Our first priority was offering solutions for poor children in the under-resourced public school system. Easy-to-use digital resources and self-directed study skills help students build self-drive and confidence in their learning.
Elimu’s Mobile Digital Reading Program was the precursor to Offline eLearning. It takes e-textbooks and video tutorials to classrooms during the school semester when school children cannot come out to Elimu Resource Centre.
We also deliver the reading program to a local prison, junior remand centre and a girls’ rescue home. In these highly vulnerable settings, participants can continue their studies during their incarceration—bringing some normalcy to the experience and giving hope of a better future outside.
Our programs help guide youth through the sensitive transition to tertiary education, future employment or business start-up. We want to be the source of solutions for youth, especially those who cannot afford further studies on their own and are at risk of joblessness or under-employment. Today, we offer valuable information and exposure to skills and opportunities to help youth chart their pathway to their own better futures.

Through our Digitech Lab, Elimu has laid out a framework for youth to gain market-relevant technology skills and hands-on work experience. Our goal is to boost opportunities for achieving dignified work, entrepreneurship or further study.
The Digitech Lab was launched with support from Comundo, the leading Swiss organisation for Personnel Development Cooperation. It grew out of experiences with our Cisco Networking Academy. After listening to youth, we surveyed employers around Kenya’s coast region asking them what are the skills they are looking for when they hire new employees. We then enlisted experts from around Kenya to guide us in designing a training curriculum that would respond to the needs of industry in and around Kilifi County.
Our Digitech Lab Tech Training program is 6-months of hands-on practical IT experience based on a curriculum that includes: web development, mobile app development, cybersecurity, networking, robotics, Internet of Things, hardware and software maintenance, graphic design, 3D printing, photography, videography and social media management.
Our first cohort of 12 Digitech trainees graduated in July 2024. 5 found job placements in the community, 2 are working now with Elimu and the remainder were offered internships with an Internet provider. The second cohort begun in August. The next in-take will be January 2025.
Digitech Lab is the solution for delivering the Digital Literacy requirements of the CBC curriculum in schools. We bring our tech resources including coding and robotics workshops to schools and assist teachers to deliver digital literacy lessons to their students. We train teachers in tech skills to improve digital proficiency and boost their professional development. Schools can use our Digitech Lab as their offsite tech lab – bringing their classes to our Lab for practical computer sessions guided by the Elimu team.
The Digitech Lab for Schools program is supported by Comundo, the leading Swiss organisation for Personnel Development Cooperation. With their help, Elimu transformed our Cisco computer lab into a tech training classroom and workshop space with the latest technology including robotics, coding programs, 3D printer, video and photography editing suites, database software and more. We work with teachers to design the solution that meets the needs of your students.
