Stay in School Project

Our goal is to keep these children from becoming another “drop out” statistic.

Elimu gives children hope of completing their education and shaping their future.

Sponorship Benefits the Whole Family

Stay in School Project is Elimu’s response to keeping children in school who would otherwise be forced to drop out. By relieving the school fees burden of at least one child, parents are in a stronger position to pay rent and food and keep their other children in school. The whole family is boosted.

Facing the Challenges

The primary school completion rate in Kilifi County is 84% but the transition to high school is only 45%. Many youths suffer from debilitating poverty that stems from inadequate education that leads to unemployment and hopelessness. When funds are lacking, brothers tend to get priority for schooling. Girls who drop out of school are at higher risk of abuse, early pregnancy and emotional disorders than girls who stay in school and complete their education. Many impoverished parents can manage the minimal expenses at primary school; however, the cost of high school can prove to be too much. Without a high school certificate in Kenya, it is nearly impossible to apply for a job even at the local department store.

Shaping Futures

We learned very quickly that just paying school fees and providing uniforms does not guarantee success in learning. We have been developing our own Elimu brand of mentorship that includes one-on-one follow up, group meetings, school visits and thematic talks for students. After graduating from high school, our sponsored students get the opportunity to volunteer at Elimu Resource Centre. They gain digital proficiency, explore their talents and acquire new skills as they work as part of the Elimu team in the Centre and in the field with our Digital Reading and Offline eLearning for Schools programs. These activities help them build their self-awareness and guide them in their future pathways for work or further study.

Their Challenges

Malindi, where Elimu is based, is one of the most under-resourced regions for education in the country. Not enough textbooks in the classroom. Not enough teachers in the schools. Electricity is lacking and unstable when installed. Internet is generally not available. Many schools don’t have a library.
